Central Utilities Plant No. 5
Birmingham, AL

This project consisted of a new 4,000-ton chilled water plant with provisions for an ultimate plant capacity of 16,000 tons. The work included sitework, building construction, landscaping, two 10-ton bridge cranes, piping, valves, pipe insulation, plumbing and HVAC system, cooling tower, pumps, compressed air system, condenser water chemical treatment system, instrumentation and controls, electrical equipment, raceways, cables and wiring.

Principal features of the work included motor control centers with variable frequency drives and solid state reduced voltage starters, primary and secondary power wiring and distribution system including 5kV and 15kV medium voltage switchgears and 5kV standalone starters, substation type and pad-mount liquid filled distribution transformer, and an outdoor natural gas-fired standby generator.

Due to the critical nature of this plant, all work had to be performed with the overall chilled water system in operation.
