Tennessee Technological University, Laboratory Science Building

Cookeville, TN

ICT was commissioned to design mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for a new LEED Silver Laboratory Science Building at TTU and the infrastructure improvements required to support the new building. The new Science Building includes 150,000 GSF of classrooms with approximately 73 laboratories, offices, and related space. The new interdisciplinary science building has 13,220 NASF of classroom space comprised of two 24-seat seminar rooms, two 70-seat classrooms, one 100-seat lecture room, and two 300-seat lecture rooms. There are 32,350 NASF for instructional labs; 6,700 NASF for open labs for the science commons, cafe, and support; and 9,050 NASF for office, general, and support space. In addition, 25,930 NASF is reserved for research and research support. Most of this space is dedicated to individual Chemistry and Biology research labs that adjoin open, collaborative research labs that house shared equipment and provide space for interdisciplinary synergistic research activities. Interspersed within the building are small group-collaboration spaces near the labs, classrooms, and commons.

The scope of work for the Campus Infrastructure Improvements included constructing a building addition onto an existing chilled water plant to increase the chilled water capacity by 1,500 tons, routing new steam and condensate lines, routing new campus chilled water supply and return lines, expansion of campus primary electrical services, and new IT services. The new chilled water distribution consists of approximately 750 linear feet of chilled water piping from the chiller plant, ranging from 20” to 8”, and includes three new chilled water manholes. The steam distribution consists of approximately 300 linear feet of 6” high pressure steam and 4” condensate return piping with three new steam manholes.

Project Highlights:

  • Basis of design for the underground distribution piping is a factory prefabricated and pre-insulated, engineered piping system consisting of a carbon steel carrier pipe, insulation, steel interior casing for high temperature piping only, and HDPE outer casing.
