NEX Main Exchange Replacement National Naval Medical Center

Bethesda, MD

The NEX is a two-story building, approximately 73,000 GSF per floor. The interior project is set up similarly to an enclosed mall/large department store with unique sections for jewelry, electronics, clothing, furnishing, children, etc., along with a barbershop, florist, food court, mini-mart grocery, and administrative functions. The Main Exchange Replacement at the Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, is a two-story department store recessed into a sloping hillside with a green roof, making the building unobtrusive to views of nearby historic buildings.

This 26-month, design-build project consisted of construction of a temporary 12,000 sq ft shopping center; demolition of a 20-year-old, 40,000 sq ft facility; and construction of a new two-story, 150,000 sq ft NEX and adjoining 196,400 sq ft parking structure. Offices for NEX management, administration, and sales operations were incorporated into the building’s unique design.
