Medical City McKinney, Emergency Department and Tower Expansion
McKinney, TX
ICT completed the $64,000,000, three-story, 96,000 sq. ft patient tower addition that opened in December 2021 at Medical City McKinney in McKinney, Texas. As part of this project, ICT fully renovated the powerhouse, designing a 1,500 sq. ft. expansion to the existing plant that allowed the replacement of the chilled water plant (expanding its capacity from 1,500 tons to 2,100 tons) replacement of the hot water heating plant (transitioning heating from two 350 horsepower steam boilers to three 300 hp condensing hot water boilers and two 200 hp steam boilers for sterilization and humidification), and expanding and improving the efficiency of the domestic hot water plant (transitioning from steam converters to hot water plate and frame heat exchangers served by the condensing boiler system). The expansion to the existing powerhouse and extension of new utilities to the new patient tower was completed with a design element that allowed the existing loading dock to be maintained open throughout construction by utilizing a utility bridge across the active loading dock. Utilities were prefabricated near the site into a utility bridge that was placed to serve in a single lift allowing the hospital to continue to utilize the loading dock with minimal interruption and shutdowns. The entire project leveraged modular construction and prefabrication to maximize the reuse of the existing building to be able to lower the energy use intensity (EUI) of the entire hospital while also adding capacity to serve the addition.
The third floor of the patient tower is dedicated to orthopedics, surgery, and trauma patients and has 24 private patient rooms. This new unit also includes an orthopedic gym and a relaxing family lounge.
