Hillsboro High School

Addition and Renovation

Nashville, TN

ICT provided MPE and FP services for the demolition, new construction, and renovation of the Hillsboro High School Campus in the heart of Green Hills. The fundamental design elements for the project consisted of energy efficiency, ease of maintenance, sustainability, and compliance with the latest Metro Nashville Public Schools design standards. The project's partial demolition and new construction phase consisted of a new four-story addition. The key components of the addition were new classrooms, athletic facilities, a library, kitchen and dining room, and an administration and enrollment center. All existing facilities not demolished were provided with all new MPE and FP services.

The mechanical system has a water source heat pump system. Energy usage is optimized with a combination of variable flow condensing boilers, variable speed loop water pumps, and a multi-stage variable speed cooling tower and condenser water system. Where possible, moisture condensate was reclaimed and diverted from stormwater to the cooling tower for makeup water savings.

The plumbing system consisted of domestic hot water, cold water, hot water return, rainwater, sanitary waste, and vent and grease waste. New cold water, hot water, hot water return, sanitary waste and vent, and grease and vent systems were provided. Natural gas and acid waste systems for numerous labs throughout the building were provided.

As part of the campus improvements, a two-story garage with a rooftop multi-purpose field was designed. The LED garage fixtures were designed with integrated daylight harvesting and occupancy controls for maximum energy savings.

Sustainability:

  • 2020 LEED Gold certification.
  • High-efficiency LED lighting throughout with dimming and daylight harvesting capabilities for all teaching areas.
  • High-efficiency water source heat and variable air volume/variable speed compressor rooftop packaged equipment for outside air.
  • All outside air is varied using a combination of space CO2 and occupancy sensors for optimum savings.

Project Highlights:

  • Reorganized with administrative offices and CTE spaces central to each Academy.
  • The site enhancements included all-new LED sports lighting for softball, baseball, football, and tennis.
